"Carnegie"
This was my first attempt to follow a pattern for what is known as a "courthouse"
square. It didn't quite work out, but I liked what it looked like when I was done anyway, so I didn't scrap it!
The "courthouse-wanna-be" square reads "FREE TO THE PEOPLE OF PITTSBURGH." Our local advocacy
group found this ironic when we went to visit the Carnegie Museum and couldn't get in-no ramp. The Carnegie fixed their
accessibility issues with little hassle but this incident was the catalyst of what would later be known in PA as pro se "sweeps." The dimension of the square is approximately 9"x
9".

JFK Quote This square is approximately 11.5"x
9.5". The fabric is a mushroom with gold flecks and the border is waves of red with tiny gold dots. The quote by John
F. Kennedy, which is hand sewn is a red script-like font reads "All of this may not be finished within the first one
hundred days. Nor will it be finished within the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even
perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin."
This square is the last square of the quilt. It is placed in the lower right corner. This quote was chosen to be the last
square to acknowledge all of the work we have ahead of us within our movement.

DPN 10 DPN 10 (Deaf President
Now 10th anniversary) is approximately 9.5" x 11.5" in dimension. Deaf President Now (DPN) was a student
protest at Gallaudet University, the liberal arts university for the Deaf in Washington, DC, pushing for the selection of
a Deaf university president. For more information on this historical event, please visit Gallaudet University's DPN anniversary site.

Act 150
The alternating color blocks of this square read vertically "Act 150."
The true size of the square is 10.5"x 15". The Pennsylvania Attendant Care Program is to enable people with
disabilities to perform activities of daily living. Consumers of Act 150 have control of their services and have the right
to recruit, hire, train, supervise, pay and, if necessary, terminate their attendants.

Universal Accessibility Act 166
The square reads "PA Act 166" and is approximately 10.25"x
7.25" in dimension.
Passed before ADA, it required
that certain buildings and facilities adhere to certain principles, standards and specifications to make the same accessible
to and usable by persons with physical disabilities and providing for enforcement.

MiCASA
The square is approximately 15.5" x 15.5" in dimension.
In 1997, Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minority Leader Dick Gephardt introduced
HR 2020, the first version of The Medicaid Community Attendant Services Act, (MiCASA). "HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS"
and "ADAPT's VISION IS 2020" were two of the common slogans used while advocating for this bill.
